Notre Dame defeated by Syracuse

Wesley Johnson scored 22 points and Andy Rautins added 21 on 5-of-9 shooting from 3-point range to lead No. 5 Syracuse to an 84-71 victory over Notre Dame on Monday night, the Orange's third Big East road win in six days, according to AP.

After shooting 54 percent in the first half, the Orange (18-1, 5-1) shot 44 percent in the second half. But the Orange were 20 of 25 from the free-throw line in the second half as they held on.

Chasing a Tiger's tale in Miss

Trying to unwind after a 14-hour day Saturday, I popped on the History Channel and watched hapless documentarians search in vain for the abominable snowman.

Nothing, not even an extra-large footprint to report.

I know how they feel.

I've been chasing a Tiger's tale across the rolling piney woods of south-central Mississippi with nothing to show for it but a notebook full of rumors. It seems that everyone has seen Tiger Woods in this town of 45,000, supposedly undergoing treatment for sex addiction at one of the country's finest facilities, according to AP.

Nadal & Safina in Australian Open

Former champion Maria Sharapova was a high profile casualty at the Australian Open on Monday but there were no dramas for Rafael Nadal and Dinara Safina who led the charge into the second round.

Britain's Andy Murray and American Andy Roddick also cruised through, as did comeback queens Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin on a day plagued by persistent rain delays with numerous matches unable to finish, reports AFP.

Hejduk will miss Olympics

Colorado Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk needs knee surgery and will miss the Vancouver Olympics.

Hejduk told The Associated Press on Monday that he will not represent the Czech Republic at the games. He'll have arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday, reports AP.

Uggla & Marlins agree at $7.8 million

The Florida Marlins spent some more money, agreeing to a $7.8 million, one-year contract with second baseman Dan Uggla.

The frugal Marlins, under pressure from the players' association, agreed last week to increase their payroll from last year's $37.5 million, the major league low. Two days later, they agreed to a $39 million, four-year contract with pitcher Josh Johnson, a deal the team still has not officially announced, says AP.

QBs & upstart Jets go for Super Bowl

The New York Jets can expect to see Peyton Manning for four quarters this time.

With a 17-14 upset of the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, brash coach Rex Ryan and his hard-hitting Jets earned a surprise spot in the AFC title game at top-seeded Indianapolis.

The Week 16 rematch is one of two conference championship games Sunday featuring some of the NFL's top quarterbacks, all within one win of the Super Bowl.

First, Manning gets another shot at the Jets, who handed Indianapolis its first loss of the season — rallying after the four-time MVP and other Colts starters were pulled early in the second half to rest, says AP.

Armstrong's dream for 'magic' formula

Lance Armstrong admitted on Monday he still lacked the "magic ratio" to leave riders trailing after failing to convert a promising breakaway in the Tour Down Under's build-up race.

Armstrong said he needed extra strength and less weight after his attack, alongside fellow Tour de France winner Oscar Pereiro, was snuffed out with three laps to go.

"If I were a little lighter ... then we would have a different conversation. Ultimately you have to be as strong as possible and as light as possible," he said, reports AFP.

Europeans happy to playing for chilly Toronto

Southern Europeans on the Toronto Raptors NBA team agree that the city's multicultural feel makes it a great destination for foreign players, as long as they pack a snow shovel and long underwear.

Unlike warmer NBA cities such as Los Angeles and Miami, Toronto has a months-long winter season where the average temperature routinely falls as low as minus nine Celsius.

One year, officials had to call in the army to help deal with a major snowfall that crippled the city.

"It's one of the best cities," said Spanish player Jose Calderon, who joined the Raptors in 2005. "But I have to be honest with you, with a little better winter it would be the best."

Toronto is one of the NBA's most northerly venues, and the only one in Canada. As more than half of the city's population of some 5.5 million were born outside the country, the European athletes are easily able to find comforting reminders of home, says Reuters.

Fight of Angola and Algeria

Angola and World Cup qualifiers Algeria joined holders Egypt and Ivory Coast in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals on Monday.

A goalless draw played out to another 50,000 capacity crowd at Luanda's 11 November stadium put both teams inito the last eight mix, at the expense of Mali and Malawi.

While the hosts and the Desert Foxes are still in contention day nine of this feast of African football proved the end of the road for Chelsea's star midfielder Michael Essien.

Ghana's best player hobbled out of contention for Tuesday's make or break Group B date with Burkina Faso after picking up a knee injury in training over the weekend.

This latest setback represented a cruel blow not only to Ghana, who are already bereft of a raft of first team players, and also Essien, who had just returned to fitness after an injury he picked up playing for his club in the Champions League in December, says AFP.

Zaki set for Hull

Egypt's Amr Zaki is set to return to the English Premier League in a loan spell with Hull until the end of the season, subject to receiving a work permit, the top-flight strugglers said Monday.

Zaki, who scored 11 Premier League goals for Wigan during a loan spell last term, will be joining from Egyptian club Zamalek if the deal is approved, says AFP.

Khan's dealing with De La Hoya

British superstar Amir Khan, the World Boxing Association super-lightweight champion, has signed a promotional deal with Oscar de la Hoya, hoping the "Golden Boy" can boost his US recognition.

Khan, 22-1 with 16 knockouts, joined a stable of British fighters that includes WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and Ricky Hatton who have deals with Golden Boy Promotions, which announced the contract with Khan on Sunday, reports AFP.

"I am really happy," Khan said. "They will be the right team to help me continue my career as an elite fighter and to expand my fan base to the United States and around the world.

Sainz of Spain wins Dakar Rally

Carlos Sainz of Spain won the Dakar Rally in just over 47 hours, closely tailing his Volkswagen teammate Nasser Al-Attiyah in the final stage on Saturday.

Sainz finished 2:12 ahead of Al-Attiyah and 35:21 better than Mark Miller of the United States in the sweep for Volkswagen. They spent two weeks traversing the world's toughest auto race through Argentina and Chile.

Al-Attiyah started the 14th stage trailing Sainz by 2:48 overall, and won the sprint from San Rafael to San Carlos de Bolivar. Sainz was 36 seconds behind in the final stage.

Sainz won the Dakar Rally on his fourth attempt.

"Today was a very special, special stage," Sainz said. "I could not afford any mistakes. We had to master everything and control our emotions. But it has been like this for a week," says AP.

Fund raises over $800K for Haiti

With retired NBA star Alonzo Mourning calling the initial wave of support "overwhelming," the Haitian earthquake relief fund he co-founded with Heat star Dwyane Wade announced Monday that its pledge total has already surpassed $800,000.

Wade's donation was a one-game salary, about $175,000, while Mourning, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul each pledged $100,000, fund officials said. The "Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti" began soliciting from pro athletes Friday, according to AP.
